사람몸의 구조에 대한 깊은 지식은 의사들뿐만 아니라 질병의 진단과 치료에 관련된 모든 사람들에게 매우 중요하다. 궁극적으로 이러한 지식은 사람몸의 직접적인 해부를 통해서만 얻을 수 있다. 지금까지 사용되고 있는 해부학 그림책은 대개 도식적 또는 반도식적인 그림이 사용되고 있었다. 이런 그림책들은 당연히 실제적인 모습을 제한적으로만 보여줄 수 있으며, 더구나 삼차원적 구조물(공간적)에 대해서는 현실감이 부족하다. 이 책이 추구하고 있는 해부학 표본의 실물사진 을 이용한 표현에는 두 가지의 중요한 장점이 있다. 우선, 대상의 실제적인 모습과 함께 그 비율과 공간적 차원을 단순한 도표나 그래픽으로 표현한 모습보다 훨씬 더 정확하고 현실적으로 재현할 수 있다는 것이다. 둘째로, 사진을 이용한 표현 은 학생들이 실제로 해부학실습실에서 보는 표본의 모습과 거의 유사하다는 것이다. 이러한 이유로 학생들은 실습 현장 에서 이 책이 제공하는 사진에 따라 실습표본에 직접 접근하여 해부의 방향을 설정할 수 있다. 또한 지난 번역본에 비해 9판에서는 실습에 더 자주 등장하는 구조물을 우선 배치하는 새로운 순서를 도입함으로써 대부분의 해부학 교과서 구성과 일치시켰다.  

최근의 의학 진단에는 영상기술의 도움이 많이 필요하다. 그러나 의사에게 해당 영상의 평가와 영상 자료를 이용한 추 가적인 치료 단계 결정에 해부학 표본에서 얻을 수 있는 경험은 여전히 필요하다. 이 책이 보여주는 높은 수준의 자료들을 완성하기까지 많은 시간과 많은 사람들의 광범위한 해부학 지식이 동원되었으며, 특히 해부학과 외과 분야에 종사하는 수 많은 동료들의 헌신적인 도움이 있었다.

의과대학에서 35년간 해부학을 강의하며 사람몸의 정교함과 아름다움에 감탄한 나머지 사람의 몸은 진화의 산물이 아니 라 신의 창조에 가깝다고 학생들에게 말한 적이 있습니다. 사람의 몸은 직접 해부한 경험이 있거나 구조와 기능을 알고 있 는 사람이라면 지식의 깊이가 깊어질수록 이러한 경외심을 가지기에 충분한 대상이고 이러한 생각이 적어도 나에게는 지난 35년간 변함이 없었기 때문입니다. 사람의 몸으로 지구상에 살아가는 인류(Homo Sapiens)는 그 존재 자체만으로도 축복받 은 존재라 할 것입니다. 따라서 사람을 대상으로 학습하고 연구하며 진료하는 사람들의 자부심과 의무감은 남다릅니다.  

사람의 몸과 마음을 대상으로 하는 의학과 보건의료 분야에서 해부학(anatomy)은 필수과목이며, 해부학그림책(atlas)은 해부학 학습에 필수적인 준비물입니다. 따라서 전 세계의 많은 해부학자와 의사들은 학습자와 연구자를 돕기 위한 수많은 해부학자료를 출간하고 있습니다. 그중 Rohen의 사진해부학은 사람의 몸을 실물사진으로 직접 제작한 훌륭한 교육자료로 서 세상에 나와 있는 많은 해부학그림책 중 단연 최고로 꼽힙니다. 이 책은 1,200여 장의 인체실물표본 사진과 110여장의 X-선촬영, 컴퓨터단층촬영, 자기공명영상 등의 많은 자료를 포함한 걸작이라 할 수 있습니다. 의과대학 학생들에게 널리 알려진 Grant 해부학그림책의 두 배, 그리고 자세하다고 알려진 Sobotta 그림책보다 무려 150장 이상 많은 그림과 생생한 실물사진을 보여줍니다. 

대부분의 해부학그림책들은 예술가들의 손을 빌려 구조물을 묘사하여 해부학을 처음 접하는 의학초년생들의 이해를 돕는 목적으로 만들어졌습니다. 그러나 Rohen의 사진해부학은 다른 실습책과는 달리 실물의 모습을 가감없이 표현하여 이미 의 학지식을 접하고 기본적인 인체구조를 알고 있는 의학과 학생, 환자를 진료하는 의사 그리고 질병의 진단과 치료를 담당하 는 분들이 평생 간직하며 참고하는 데 손색이 없습니다. 

더구나 이 책은 실물사진이면서도 표본의 제작기술이 정교하고, 사진 하나하나가 깨끗하고 자세하며 아름답기까지 합니 다. 처음 해부학을 공부하는 학생들에게 좋은 해부학그림책이 없다면 실제로 해부를 진행할 때 중요한 구조물을 놓칠 수 있습니다. Rohen의 사진해부학은 의학을 공부하는 모든 사람들에게 길잡이가 될 것이며 직접 해부를 해볼 기회가 없는 사 람들에게는 간접적인 실습 경험을 제공하는데 부족함이 없을 것입니다. 

특히 최근에는 의학교육의 세계적인 트랜드로 통합교육시스템이 도입되면서 인체해부학 실습시간이 대폭 축소되는 추세 입니다. Rohen의 사진해부학은 해부학 실습시간이 부족한 학생들이 실습실 밖에서도 인체실습표본을 관찰할 수 있는 대 안이 될 것입니다. 또한 이 책은 대한해부학회의 e-Anatomy 교육시스템으로 온라인 인체해부실습을 공부한 후에는 실습 내용을 보완하고 교수가 학생들의 지식을 평가하는 데도 유용해 많은 교수와 학생들의 기대도 충족시켜줄 것입니다. 

아홉째 판을 번역하면서 책의 용어는 사진해부학 아홉째 판 원서(Anatomy-A photographic atlas)에 표기된 영어를 기 준으로 2020년 발간된 대한의사협회 의학용어집(여섯째 판)과 대한해부학회의 해부학용어(여섯째 판)의 한글용어를 병기하 였습니다. 

모쪼록 이 책이 사람의 몸을 공부하는 많은 사람들에게 도움이 되기를 바랍니다. 국내 여러 의과대학 해부학교수들이 노력과 애정으로 번역하였지만 자료가 방대하여 혹여 미비한 점이 있지 않을까 하는 염려도 있습니다. 끝으로 이처럼 훌륭 한 책의 번역을 결정해주신 군자출판사 장주연 대표님과 보이지 않는 곳에서 밤낮을 가리지 않고 수고해주신 편집부 여러 분들의 노고에 진심으로 감사를 드립니다.
